Baron Munchausen’s Crawl Test Lab

Spelling Errors Example

I have always spelled the word "victory" with several additional vowels, for the comfort of my hussars.

The short answer

What it is
Spelling errors are misspelled words in a page's visible text or its title and meta tags. Grammar errors, such as a verb that does not match its subject, belong to the same issue.
Why it matters
Mistakes make readers doubt the page and the people behind it. A typo in a key term can also make the page harder to match to a search.
How a crawler should report it
A crawler should show a spelling and grammar notice with each flagged word, a short text snippet, and a suggested fix. It should mark the result as advisory, since names and terms cause false alarms.

What typos cost a page and how to catch them

Spelling errors are words written in a form that a dictionary does not accept. They slip in from fast typing, pasted text, poor machine translation, and old templates. Some are copied across thousands of pages by one bad string in a footer. Others are real words used in the wrong place, like "their" for "there." A basic spell checker will miss those, since each word is valid alone.

Browsers show typos as written. Their red underlines appear only in fields that you can edit. Search engines handle mistakes in queries well, and they may suggest a fix to the person searching. They are less forgiving about quality. Google's own advice for writers asks if a page looks sloppy or rushed. One typo will not sink a page. A page full of errors sends a poor signal to readers.

To detect errors at scale, extract the visible text and check it against a dictionary for the page's language. Include titles, meta descriptions, headings, and image alt text. Read the lang attribute so that the right dictionary is used. An AI review can catch grammar and wrong-word errors that a list cannot. Expect false alarms on brand names, product codes, and old spellings. Keep a custom list of allowed terms.

To fix the errors, start with templates and shared blocks, since one change there repairs many pages. Then work through the pages that get the most traffic. Pick one regional style and stick to it, so you do not mix gray and grey. Add a spell check step to your publishing process. For translated pages, ask a fluent reader to review the text. Set a correct lang value on every page.
